What Is INCI? A Beginner’s Guide to Cosmetic Ingredient Names

Ever looked at the back of a skincare product and wondered what all those complicated ingredient names actually mean?

You’re not alone.

From Butylene Glycol and Glycerin to Butyrospermum Parkii Butter and PEG-100 Stearate, cosmetic ingredient lists can sometimes look more like a chemistry textbook than a moisturizer.

But you don’t need a chemistry degree to start understanding them.

There is a system behind those names. It’s called INCI, short for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, and learning the basics of INCI is one of the first steps toward understanding what’s actually inside your skincare products.

Once you recognize a few common naming patterns, those long and unfamiliar words become much less intimidating.

A Brief History of INCI

Before the 1970s, cosmetic ingredients weren’t named consistently. Manufacturers could use common names, trade names, or terminology that varied from one country to another. The same ingredient could therefore appear under different names on different products, making ingredient lists difficult to compare.

As the beauty industry became increasingly global, the need for a standardized naming system became clear.

In 1973, the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) – now the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) – introduced the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, or INCI.

The goal was simple: create a standardized system for identifying cosmetic ingredients so that manufacturers, formulators, regulators, healthcare professionals, and consumers could more easily understand what is in a product.

Today, INCI names are widely used throughout the global cosmetics industry, although specific ingredient-labeling requirements can vary by country or region where a product is sold.

INCI Names vs. Trade Names and Marketing Names

One of the most confusing things about cosmetic ingredients is that the name you see on a product label may not be the same name used by the company that supplied the ingredient.

That’s because cosmetic ingredients often have several different types of names.

INCI Name

The INCI name is the standardized ingredient name generally used when declaring the ingredient on a cosmetic product label.

For example, a supplier might sell a raw material under a commercial name, but the finished product label may list the ingredient using its INCI name.

Trade Name

A trade name is a commercial name created by a raw material supplier to identify a specific ingredient or blend.

A trade name may represent more than one ingredient. It can also describe a particular grade, concentration, processing method, or combination of materials.

For example, a supplier may sell a specialized botanical blend under a branded trade name. The finished product’s ingredient declaration, however, will list the individual ingredients using their appropriate INCI names.

Marketing Name

A marketing name is the consumer-facing language used to describe an ingredient or technology.

Terms such as “marine complex,” “vitamin blend,” or “peptide technology” may sound impressive, but they don’t necessarily tell you exactly what appears on the ingredient label.

This is why it’s important to distinguish between the marketing story surrounding an ingredient and the actual INCI names listed on the product.

What Does an INCI Name Tell You?

An INCI name is essentially a standardized name used to identify a cosmetic ingredient.

Once you learn some of the basic naming conventions, ingredient lists become much easier to decode.

Consider surfactants and emulsifiers. When you see prefix or suffix pairings like Cetearyl Alcohol or PEG-100 Stearate, the name can provide clues about the chemical structure and the hydrophobic (fat-loving) and hydrophilic (water-loving) components used to form the molecule.

Polymers and silicones follow equally distinct patterns. Ingredients ending in -siloxane or -methicone, like Cyclopentasiloxane or Dimethicone, can signal a silicone-based structure that may contribute to slip, spreadability, barrier properties, or a smooth tactile feel.

Botanical ingredients follow their own naming conventions. For example, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract refers to an extract derived from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant – the plant used to produce green tea.

You may also see names that tell you which part of a plant was used, such as the leaf, seed, root, flower, or fruit.

Learning to recognize these patterns can help you quickly identify the types of ingredients in a formula without needing to memorize every ingredient name.

Does an INCI Name Mean an Ingredient Is Safe?

Not necessarily – and this is an important distinction.

An INCI name is not a safety certification or approval.

The fact that an ingredient has an INCI name does not mean that PCPC or a regulatory agency has approved it for every cosmetic use. The safety, suitability, and regulatory compliance of an ingredient in a finished product are ultimately the responsibility of the company marketing that product.

Think of INCI as a standardized language for identifying ingredients, not a guarantee that an ingredient is safe, effective, or appropriate for every formulation.

Why Ingredient Lists Don’t Tell You Everything

While the INCI system successfully created a universal language for cosmetic labeling, an ingredient list tells you what an ingredient is, not how it behaves. Behind identical INCI names lie massive structural, physical, and quality differences that shape how a formula actually performs on the skin:

Molecular Weight & Particle Size: An ingredient listed simply as Sodium Hyaluronate could be an ultra-low molecular weight form (5 kDa) designed to interact deeper within the skin, or a high molecular weight form (1.5 MDa) that remains on the surface to form a protective, hydrating film.

Viscosity & Polymer Architecture: The INCI name Dimethicone applies equally to a fluid as thin as water (5 cSt) and a heavy, sticky liquid (100,000 cSt). Similarly, ingredients like Carbomer or Dimethicone Crosspolymer can range from light, fluid gel networks to rigid, high-viscosity elastomers depending on polymer chain length and the degree of crosslinking.

Concentration & Supplier Blends: Label declarations hide commercial dilutions. An entry like Centella Asiatica Extract gives no indication of true active content – it could represent a highly concentrated, 99% pure powder or a pre-diluted carrier solution that is 98% water and glycerin with only a trace of the botanical itself.

Ultimately, INCI standardizes the identity of a molecule, but not its performance grade, structure, or quality. This is why cosmetic chemists look far beyond the consumer label when selecting raw materials for a finished product.

Why Learning INCI Matters

Understanding INCI won’t turn you into a cosmetic chemist overnight – but it can help you become a much smarter skincare shopper.

Once you understand the basics, you can start to:

  • Recognize key ingredients and understand their actual function
  • Compare formulas objectively across different price points and brands.
  • Spot patterns in the products that consistently work – or don’t work – for your skin.
  • See past marketing claims to evaluate what’s actually inside the bottle.

Most importantly, learning INCI helps you move beyond the idea that complicated-sounding ingredients are automatically “bad” or that natural-sounding ingredients are automatically “better.”

A cosmetic ingredient list is not a list of good ingredients and bad ingredients. It’s a snapshot of the chemistry used to create a product.

The real question isn’t simply, “What’s in this product?”

It’s:

What does each ingredient do, why is it there, and how does it work with everything else in the formula?

That’s where the science of cosmetic chemistry begins.
